Although this game would not have been played naked at the highly respectable gathering described by Mr. Goldsmith, you can play it naked, or in underwear, if you want to. The player who is IT strips to some state that makes her more spankable.
Everyone sits in a ring around the IT facing her. With her eyes closed, a tennis shoe is hidden under the butt of some player.
The object is to pass the shoe from one player to the next, all around the circle, without the IT ever guessing where it is. So each pass has to be made while the IT is looking at the other side of the circle.
The first pass establishes the direction of travel, clockwise or counter-clockwise. The IT does not know which direction the shoe is passed.
While the IT is looking one way, a player on the other side of the circle may get up and try to spank her. If she turns in time, and shouts the name of the person trying to spank her, she spanks him instead. But she must shout before the spank connects. She may not protect her fanny with her hand at any time.
If the IT accuses a person of having the shoe, and she is right, that person becomes IT. If she is wrong, she gets a spank.
If the shoe is caught in the act of passage, the passer becomes the new IT.
If shoe travels all around the circle without the IT ever catching it, she gets a spank from each player, and a new IT is chosen at random.

In the game as described by Goldsmith, the IT was hit a thump with the heel of a shoe; shoe heels in the 1760s were serious things, hard and sharp, so this was not a trivial blow. Although she would not have been bare, of course, there were no pettycoats - only a light dress and some drawers to protect her. So if you play using hand spanks on the bare bottom, or even a light leather paddle, this is not a more serious thump than in the game as played by the Goldsmiths.

Description would but beggar, therefore it is unnecessary to describe this new mortification. Death! To be seen by ladies of such high breeding in such vulgar attitudes! Nothing better could ensue from such a vulgar play of Mr. Flamborough's proposing. We seemed stuck to the ground for some time, - as if actually petrified with amazement.

Hot Cockles is an outright spanking game; Blind Man's Buff also involved teasing and tormenting (in Scotland, it was called Blind Harry, and was played with this rhyme: "Naked Blind Harry/Ten years in Faerie", however other than the rhyme I've no evidence it was played naked.) Certainly if Hunt the Slipper was played with thumping the ass of the player in the middle, Blind Man's Buff would have been too. "Questions and Commands" is the game we call "Truth or Dare". Thus four games were played at this country party of the 1760s : three were spanking games and one was Truth or Dare! That was what people did for fun in those days. But even then there were Miss Carolina Wilelmina Amelia Skeggses in the world - why did we let them win?
